The common cemented carbide always include tungsten cobalt series, with YG as its code name, and tungsten titanium series, with YT as its code name, as usual, because of the good performance of impact resistance for tungsten cobalt series cemented carbide, it is widely used in wooden material cutting, for example, when looking at woodworking cemented carbide cutting tool, you sometimes can find the mark such as YG8 or YG15 on its body, do you know the meaning of this mark? The number behind YG is the content of cobalt contained inside, the more content of cobalt, the better performance of alloy’s impact resistance and bending strength.
How to choose right cemented carbide cutting tools for working? Generally speaking, you have to consider the cutting material and cutting accuracy requirement. More information is introduced in the following article in details.
Firstly, when processing some crisp materials such as cast iron, it is better to choose YG series cemented carbide. When cutting crisp materials, both the cutting force and cutting quantity of heat would be centralized at the cutting edge, and meanwhile there is a certain amount of impact strength. Because of such material feature, cutting tools should have good strength, toughness and thermal conductivity. With good cutting performance and sharp cutting effect, YG series cemented carbide also can be used to cut nonferrous metals.
Secondly, if you want to cut some materials with good performance of toughness such as steel, you’d better choose the YT series cemented carbide. When cutting such materials, cutting crumbs would be with form of band shape and the cutting force is more stable, however, there is strong force of friction at front tool face, therefore the average temperature at cutting part is too high. Because of such material characteristics, the cutting tool should have good hardness even under high temperature, good performance of abrasive resistance, bonding resistance and oxidative stability. However, when cutting steel with YT series cemented carbide at low speed, you should be more careful, due to low cutting temperature, YT series cemented carbide has poor toughness so that it is easy to fall into ruins. Under such circumstance, the durability of YT series cemented carbide is not as better as YG series cemented carbide. Please not to use YT series cemented carbide to cut some stainless steel materials which contain the Ti element.
Finally, when cutting quenched steel, stainless steel and heat resistant steel, you’d better choose YG series cemented carbide.
